Mobile Mechanic vs Garage: What Should You Choose?

A fair look at which jobs suit a mobile mechanic, which really belong in a garage, and how to decide for your car and your repair.

, 5 minute read

Choose a mobile mechanic when the car can’t be driven safely or you can’t easily get to a garage, and the job can be done on a level, safe surface. Choose a garage when the work needs a ramp, specialist equipment or a road test facility. Neither is better across the board. It depends on the job, the car and where it’s parked.

Where a mobile mechanic makes most sense

The car shouldn’t be driven

If the brakes are failing, the engine is overheating or the battery is dead, driving to a garage isn’t an option, and recovery can be a cost of its own. A mobile mechanic can look at the car where it sits and, in many cases, repair it there.

You can’t lose your day

Dropping a car at a garage usually means arranging lifts, waiting around or taking time off. With a mobile mechanic the car stays at home, or in your workplace car park if you have permission, and you carry on with your day.

Routine and straightforward repairs

Plenty of common work can be done on a driveway with the right tools: oil services, batteries, brake pads and discs, and many diagnostic visits. Our brake repairs and full car service are good examples.

You like seeing what’s being done

When the work is on your driveway, you can ask to see the worn part and have it explained on the spot, instead of hearing about it over the phone.

When a garage is the better choice

We’d rather tell you this up front than turn up and waste your time. A garage is often the better choice for:

  • Jobs needing a ramp or engine crane. Some clutch, gearbox and exhaust work needs the car raised higher than axle stands safely allow. Whether a clutch replacement can be done on site depends on the car.
  • Major engine work. Engine rebuilds or head gasket jobs can need a workshop, machine tools and time.
  • Alignment and geometry. Four-wheel alignment needs dedicated equipment on a level bay.
  • Tyre fitting and balancing. This is usually done with fixed machines.
  • Welding and bodywork. Fire risk and space make these workshop jobs.
  • Air conditioning regassing. It needs specific equipment and refrigerant handling.
  • Bad weather or awkward locations. A sloping road, soft ground or a tight spot next to traffic can rule out a job on safety grounds.
  • The MOT itself. This must be done at an approved MOT test centre. No mobile mechanic can issue one.

How the two compare

  • Convenience: mobile wins, because the mechanic comes to you and the car doesn’t need to move.
  • Equipment: a garage wins, with ramps, presses and fixed machines. A well-equipped van can still do a lot.
  • Parts on the day: a garage may keep more stock on the shelf. A mobile mechanic usually needs to know the car in advance, so details matter when booking.
  • Waiting: this varies for both, so ask.
  • Cost: don’t assume either is cheaper. Compare written quotes for the same work and the same parts, including any recovery fees you’d avoid.

Questions to ask whoever you choose

  1. Are you insured for the work?
  2. What exactly does your quote include, and could extra work be needed once the job is opened up?
  3. Have you done this job on this type of car?
  4. What happens if it turns out to need a ramp or a workshop?
  5. Will you give me an itemised invoice?

If your car is under a new-car warranty, ask about records too. Keeping an itemised invoice showing parts and fluids helps, and the RAC explains you don’t have to use a dealer, provided the conditions are met.
