Mobile Thermostat Replacement in Essex
A cold heater or a gauge that won’t settle can point to a sticking thermostat. We test and replace thermostats at your home or workplace across Essex and East London, then refill and bleed the coolant.

What a thermostat does in your car
The thermostat is a small valve that controls when coolant goes to the radiator. On a cold start it stays shut, so the engine warms up quickly. Once the engine reaches working temperature, a wax capsule inside expands and the valve opens to let coolant through. Many newer cars use an electronically controlled version that varies the temperature to suit the load.
It can fail in two ways, and they feel opposite. Stuck open, coolant flows all the time, so the engine runs cool, the heater stays lukewarm and fuel use rises, since the engine never reaches its best temperature. A fault code may also appear.
Stuck closed is the dangerous one. Hot coolant can’t reach the radiator, the top hose may stay cool while the gauge climbs, and the engine can overheat within a short drive. It is a small part, but it can cause big damage, and a similar picture can come from low coolant or a poor water pump, so we test first.
Why fix it sooner
Overheating avoided
A thermostat stuck shut can cook an engine, so it’s better found than guessed.
Heater back to normal
A correct running temperature usually brings proper cabin heat and windscreen demisting back.
Air bled out properly
Trapped air can cause false readings, so we bleed the system fully after fitting.
How we replace a thermostat
- 01
Test the system
We compare hose temperatures, coolant level, gauge behaviour and any fault codes to confirm the thermostat is the likely cause.
- 02
Let it cool, then drain
The engine must be cold. We drain enough coolant to work safely, then reach the housing.
- 03
Fit the new part
The old thermostat and seal come out, the housing face is cleaned, and the new part goes in the right way round.
- 04
Refill and prove it
We refill, bleed the air and run the engine until the radiator fan cuts in, checking for leaks and a steady gauge.
When to contact a mechanic
A heater that takes an age to warm up, or a gauge that behaves differently from how it used to, is worth a check before winter or a long trip. A thermostat stuck open won’t usually leave you stranded, but it does waste fuel.
A gauge climbing towards hot is more urgent. Stop when it is safe and let the engine cool. Contact us and tell us what the gauge and heater were doing.
Don’t keep driving a car with a rising temperature gauge and never open the coolant cap on a hot engine, because pressurised coolant can cause serious burns.
Why a thermostat is a good job for your driveway
A car that may overheat is best not driven to a garage, and a home visit lets the engine sit cold, which this job needs. On many engines the housing is easy to reach, so it works on a drive in Wickford, Upminster on the Essex border, or elsewhere we cover. On others it sits under the inlet manifold, so the job takes longer, and we will say if a ramp or garage suits it better. All work is subject to the suitability of the job and location.
Common questions
How much does a thermostat replacement cost?
It mostly depends on how easily the housing can be reached and whether your car uses a simple valve or an electronic unit. On some engines the part sits under other components. Coolant is also needed afterwards. Tell us the make, model and engine and we will quote.
Can I drive with a thermostat stuck open?
Usually the car will still move, but the engine stays cooler than it should, which raises fuel use and leaves the heater weak. It is still worth repairing, as demisting suffers and the cause may not be what it seems. A thermostat stuck shut is a different matter, so don’t risk that.
How do I know it is the thermostat and not something else?
Often you can’t tell from the driver’s seat. Low coolant, trapped air, a weak water pump, a faulty sensor or a blocked radiator can look similar. We check hose temperatures, the gauge and any fault codes before recommending the part, so you aren’t replacing the wrong thing.
