Mobile Brake Repairs in Essex

Squealing, grinding or a soft pedal is your car telling you something. We inspect and repair brakes on your driveway or at work across Essex and East London, so a worrying car stays off the road.

How your brakes work and why wear matters

Press the pedal and hydraulic fluid pushes the caliper pistons, which squeeze friction pads against a spinning disc. Some cars still use shoes and drums at the rear. Pads and discs are made to wear away, so the only question is how far they have gone.

Once the friction material runs out, metal grinds on metal, stopping distances grow and a pad job can turn into new discs as well. Calipers can also seize, leaving a pad dragging, and brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which is why it is changed at the intervals your manufacturer sets.

The MOT is strict here. A pad worn to its wear indicator is a major fault, and a pad under 1.5mm or a leaking hydraulic pipe or hose is dangerous. Oddly, the pad wear light alone isn’t a reason for failure, but it is a reason to have the pads looked at.

What you get from a mobile brake visit

No risky drive

A car with doubtful brakes shouldn’t be driven to a garage, so we come to it.

All four corners checked

We look at pads, discs, calipers, hoses and fluid, not only the noisy wheel.

You see the wear

We can show you your old pads and discs and explain what needed replacing.

What a brake repair involves

  1. 01

    Inspect

With the wheels off we measure pad and disc wear, then check calipers, slider pins, hoses, pipes and fluid condition.

  2. 02

    Agree the work

We explain what is worn, what is still fine and what it will cost before anything is replaced.

  3. 03

    Fit and clean up

New parts go on with the hub face cleaned and sliders moving freely. Electronic handbrakes may need a tool to wind back.

  4. 04

    Test the pedal

We pump the pedal up before the car moves, check the fluid level, torque the wheels and confirm a firm pedal.

When to contact a mechanic

Don’t wait for a noise to get worse. The Highway Code says a car pulling to one side under braking should be seen by a garage or mechanic immediately, and low brake fluid can lead to brake failure.

Book a check if you hear grinding, feel vibration through the wheel, or the fluid level keeps dropping. Contact us and describe what the pedal is doing, because that often tells us more than the noise.

If the pedal sinks to the floor or the brakes stop working properly, don’t drive the car at all; keep it parked and call a mechanic.

Brake work on your driveway

Brakes are one of the best jobs to do where the car sits, because the riskiest part of any brake repair is getting there with bad brakes. Pads and discs are usually straightforward on a firm, level driveway in Wickford, Hornchurch on the Essex border, or anywhere else we cover. The limits are soft ground, slopes and badly seized components, which may need a garage. All work is subject to the suitability of the job and location.

Common questions

How much do new brake pads and discs cost?

That depends on the car, whether it needs pads alone or discs as well, and whether it is the front or rear axle. Calipers, electronic handbrakes and larger performance brakes also change the job. Give us your registration and symptoms and we will quote for your car.

Do I need new discs every time I change pads?

Not always. Discs have a minimum thickness set by the manufacturer, so we measure them and check for scoring, rust lips and cracks. Good discs can take new pads. If they are near the limit, new pads on old discs often means doing the same job again sooner.

Why do my brakes squeal even with new pads?

New pads can make some noise while they bed in, and a little squeal after rain often clears quickly. If it continues, it may be glazing, missing shims, dirt or a sticking slider. Grinding is different and should be checked straight away, so tell us which noise you are hearing.
