Mobile Clutch Replacement in Essex
A clutch that slips, judders or feels wrong rarely improves by itself. We check clutch problems at your location across Essex and East London, and replace the clutch on site where the space is safe and suitable.

How a clutch works and why it wears
The clutch connects the engine to the gearbox. A friction plate is clamped between the flywheel and a pressure plate, and pressing the pedal releases that clamp through a bearing, so you can change gear or pull away. Each time you use it, a little friction material is lost, just as with brake pads.
How long it lasts comes down to use. Stop-start traffic, towing and holding the car on the biting point at junctions all speed up wear. Eventually the plate can’t grip, the engine revs without the car gaining speed, and hill starts get difficult.
Getting to the clutch means removing the gearbox, which is why this is one of the bigger jobs on a car. Many modern cars also have a dual mass flywheel, a two-piece part that can wear out too. If yours has one, we check it, as refitting a worn flywheel can spoil a new clutch.
Why have your clutch checked by us
Fault confirmed first
We separate worn plates from hydraulic faults, as a failed cylinder can feel just like a worn clutch.
Honest about location
We assess your space first and tell you straight if it isn’t suitable.
No drive on a failing clutch
If the job suits your site, a car that can’t change gear stays where it is.
What a clutch replacement involves
- 01
Assess car and space
We confirm the fault, then check the car’s layout and that the ground is firm, level and safe.
- 02
Remove the gearbox
With the car securely raised, driveshafts, starter and linkages come away, and the gearbox is supported and lowered out.
- 03
Fit the new clutch
Friction plate, pressure plate and release bearing are replaced, and the flywheel is inspected before the new parts are aligned.
- 04
Refit and test
The gearbox goes back, the hydraulics are bled where needed, and we check pedal feel and gear selection.
When to contact a mechanic
Book a check as soon as the clutch starts to slip or the biting point changes. A slipping clutch generates heat, and carrying on can damage the flywheel as well as the plate.
If the pedal goes to the floor or stays down, the problem may be hydraulic rather than the clutch itself, and that can be a smaller repair. Contact us, tell us how the pedal feels and whether the car still selects gears.
If the clutch won’t disengage or the pedal loses all pressure, don’t try to drive on, because a car you can’t take out of gear is hard to control at junctions.
Clutch work on site: when it does and doesn’t work
A clutch is the job where location matters most. We need a safe, firm, level surface and room to work under the car and lower a gearbox, so a sloping drive or gravel won’t do. Where it suits, in places like Romford on the Essex border or Basildon, a car that can’t move is no longer stranded. Some four-wheel drive and tightly packaged cars need a garage ramp. All work is subject to the suitability of the job and location.

Common questions
Can you really replace a clutch on my driveway?
Sometimes. It depends on the car and the space. We need a firm, level surface with enough room to raise the car safely and lower the gearbox. If your driveway or road isn’t suitable, or the car needs a ramp, we will tell you honestly before work starts.
How long can I keep driving with a slipping clutch?
There is no safe mileage to quote. A slipping clutch often gets worse quickly, and it can leave you unable to pull away on a hill or at a junction. The heat can also damage the flywheel. Have it checked soon rather than waiting until it stops working altogether.
What affects the cost of a clutch replacement?
The main factors are the car’s layout, how much has to be removed to reach the gearbox, and whether a dual mass flywheel needs replacing. Hydraulic parts such as a slave cylinder can add to it. Contact us with your registration and we will explain what your car needs.
