Slow to start, or nothing but a click? We test your battery and charging system where the car sits across Essex and East London, then replace the battery if that really is the problem.

What your car battery does, and what kills it

The battery delivers the short, heavy burst of current that turns the starter motor, and it keeps the electronics steady when the engine is off. Once the engine runs, the alternator takes over and recharges it.

Batteries lose capacity with age, and cold mornings simply reveal what was already happening. Short trips are a common killer, as the alternator doesn’t get enough time to replace what starting used. A car left parked for weeks can also go flat, either through normal standby drain or a fault such as a light or module that won’t sleep.

Not every battery is the same. Cars with stop-start usually need an EFB or AGM type, and a standard battery may fail early in one. Many newer cars also have a battery monitoring system, which should be told when a new one is fitted so that it charges correctly. Fitting the right type is part of the job.

Why have your battery seen on site

Tested, not assumed

We test the battery and alternator output, as a flat battery isn’t always a dead one.

Correct type for your car

Standard, EFB or AGM, matched to what your car needs and sized to fit.

Car stays where it stopped

A car that won’t start can’t go to a garage, so we come to it.

How a battery visit works

  1. 01

    Test the battery

We check its voltage, its condition under load and the state of the terminals and earth connection.

  2. 02

    Test the charging

With the engine running, we measure the alternator’s output so a charging fault isn’t mistaken for a bad battery.

  3. 03

    Fit the replacement

Where the battery is the cause, we fit the right type securely, with clean terminals and the clamp tight.

  4. 04

    Register and check

Where the car needs it, the new battery is registered, and we check starting and any settings that reset.

When to contact a mechanic

A slow start on a cold morning is often the first warning, so get the battery tested before it leaves you stuck. Also check it if you need repeated jump starts, or a new battery has already gone flat, as that suggests a drain or charging fault.

The Highway Code says to get the charge warning light checked as soon as possible. Contact us and tell us what happens when you turn the key or press start.

Don’t jump start or charge a battery that is swollen, cracked or leaking, because batteries give off flammable gas and contain corrosive acid.

Battery problems are made for a mobile mechanic

A car with a flat battery usually can’t come to you, which makes this one of the most natural mobile jobs. In most cars the battery is easy to reach on a drive, or in a car park at work in Brentwood, Hornchurch on the Essex border, or elsewhere we cover. Some are under a seat or the boot floor, which takes longer, and a car stuck on a busy road is best moved by recovery first. All work is subject to the suitability of the job and location.

Common questions

How much does a new car battery cost?

It depends on the battery your car needs. AGM and EFB types for stop-start cars cost more than standard ones, and registration or awkward access can add to the job. Send us your registration and we will work out the correct battery and give you a quote.

How long should a car battery last?

There is no fixed lifespan. Age, climate, short trips and the electrical load all play a part, and a car that sits unused for long periods tends to be harder on its battery. Rather than going by age, a proper test gives a clearer idea of how much life is left.

Is it my battery or my alternator?

It can be hard to tell at the roadside. A battery light on the dash while driving, or a car that dies soon after a jump start, may point to the alternator. A slow start after standing often points to the battery. Testing both is the way to be sure.
