Mobile Alternator & Starter Motor Repairs in Essex
A battery light on the dash, or a single click when you turn the key, often points past the battery. We test and repair alternators and starter motors across Essex and East London.

How the alternator and starter motor work
These two parts sit at opposite ends of the same job. The starter motor is a powerful electric motor that spins the engine to get it going, using a solenoid to push a small gear into the flywheel. It works for a few seconds at a time, then rests until the next start.
The alternator takes over from there. Driven by the auxiliary belt, it makes the electricity that runs the car and recharges the battery, typically at around 14 volts. Once it fails, the car runs on battery power alone, and that won’t last.
Alternators often fail through worn brushes, diodes or bearings, and starters through worn solenoid contacts or a damaged gear. Symptoms overlap with a tired battery, so we test the whole circuit first, including the earth connections, as a poor earth lead can look exactly like a failed part.
What you get from testing first
The right part replaced
We test the battery, alternator, starter and earth leads before recommending anything.
No tow to the garage
A car that won’t start can often be repaired where it sits.
Belt checked as well
A worn or slipping auxiliary belt can stop an alternator charging properly.
How we repair charging and starting faults
- 01
Test the circuit
We measure battery condition, charging voltage, the starter’s supply and any voltage drop across the main cables.
- 02
Confirm the fault
Belts, connectors and earth points are checked, because a loose cable can mimic a dead alternator or starter.
- 03
Replace the part
With the battery disconnected, the failed unit is removed and the replacement fitted, along with any supporting brackets.
- 04
Retest
We start the car several times, check the charging voltage under load and see the warning light go out.
When to contact a mechanic
Treat a battery light on the dash as urgent. The Highway Code says it may mean the battery isn’t charging, so have it checked as soon as possible and don’t plan a long trip.
A starter often gives warnings too, such as clicks, slow cranking or needing several tries. If the car has started failing to crank from time to time, contact us before it leaves you stuck somewhere awkward.
If the battery light comes on while driving, head somewhere safe straight away, because a car running on battery alone can lose power steering, lights and eventually the engine.
Fixing a car that can’t get to a garage
When a car won’t start, a garage means paying for recovery, so a mobile repair suits this well. Many alternators can be reached from above on a drive in Romford, on the Essex border, or Ilford. Starters are less predictable: some sit low behind the engine and need the car raised on firm, level ground, and a few need a ramp. Work across Essex is subject to the suitability of the job and location.
Common questions
How much does an alternator or starter motor replacement cost?
It depends on the car, how hard the unit is to reach and which part it needs. On some engines the alternator sits right at the top, on others other parts must come off first. Contact us with your registration and the symptoms, and we will give you a quote.
Can I drive with a failing alternator?
Not far. The car will run on battery power until it drains, then electrics fail and the engine may stop, possibly somewhere unsafe. If the battery light is on, avoid long journeys and using heavy loads such as the heater fan. It is better to have it checked where the car is parked.
Why does my car only click when I try to start it?
A single click may mean the solenoid is working but the starter motor isn’t turning. A rapid clicking more often suggests a flat battery or a poor connection. Check that the terminals are tight, but don’t keep trying, as that can flatten the battery further. We can test it for you.
