Mobile Cam Belt Replacement in Essex
A cam belt usually gives no warning before it fails, and on many engines that failure means serious damage. We replace cam belts on schedule at your home or work across Essex and East London.

What a cam belt does and why the timing is critical
The cam belt, also called a timing belt, links the crankshaft to the camshaft so the valves open and close in step with the pistons. It is a toothed rubber belt hidden behind a cover, and it does this thousands of times a minute.
On many engines, known as interference engines, the valves and pistons share the same space at different moments. If the belt snaps or jumps a tooth, the timing is lost and pistons can strike open valves. That can mean bent valves, a damaged cylinder head and a bill far larger than the belt ever was.
Belts age as well as wear, which is why manufacturers set a replacement limit in both miles and years. A low-mileage car can still be due. Not every car has a belt, though. Some use a timing chain, and some newer engines run the belt inside the oil, so we check what yours has first.
Why replace it before it fails
Planned, not panicked
A belt done on schedule is a booked job, not a recovery truck and engine repair.

Tensioners and idlers wear with the belt, so they are usually replaced together.
Timing set correctly
We lock the engine in position and turn it by hand to confirm timing before starting.
What a cam belt change involves
- 01
Confirm what is fitted
We check belt or chain, your manufacturer’s interval, and whether the water pump is driven by the belt.
- 02
Strip for access
Covers, auxiliary belt and sometimes an engine mount come off, with the engine supported where needed.
- 03
Lock and renew
The engine is locked in time, the old belt and tensioner come off, and new parts go on.
- 04
Turn over and verify
We rotate the engine by hand through full turns, recheck the marks, rebuild it and run it up.
When to contact a mechanic
Don’t wait for a symptom, because usually there isn’t one. Check your service book for the mileage and age limit, and look for a receipt or stamp showing the last belt change. If you have just bought a used car with no record, treat it as due until proven otherwise.
Noise or leaks around the timing cover should be checked sooner. Contact us with your registration and we will help work out where you stand.
If the engine suddenly cuts out and won’t restart, or spins over faster than usual, don’t keep cranking it, as that can add to any engine damage.
Can a cam belt be changed on your drive?
On many cars, yes. The work is at the side of the engine, so a level, firm drive in Billericay, Wickford or elsewhere in Essex is often enough, and you avoid driving an overdue belt to a garage. It is a long job, so the car must be able to stay put undisturbed. Tight engine bays and some oil-bathed belts may need a garage ramp, and we will tell you. All work is subject to the suitability of the job and location.

Common questions
How much does a cam belt replacement cost?
That varies more than most jobs, because access differs so much between engines. Some cars take far longer to strip than others, and the price also depends on whether the water pump is due at the same time. Send us your registration and we will quote for your engine.
How often should a cam belt be changed?
There is no single answer. Each manufacturer gives its own limit in miles and years, and the belt is due at whichever comes first. Short, gentle mileage doesn’t stop the rubber ageing. Check your service book, or give us the registration and we will look up the schedule.
Should I change the water pump at the same time?
If the belt drives the pump, it usually makes sense. The pump sits behind the same covers, so replacing it during a cam belt job saves paying for that access twice. A pump seizing can also take the new belt with it. We will check how your engine is laid out.
